In 1932 Libyan Desert glass was said to have been discovered by P. Clayton, but before 1932 this gorgeous yellow-green glass has a long history that traces back to ancient times. In 1922 Howard Carter discovered King Tutenkhamen’s burial chamber and when he entered the chamber he discovered statues of ivory, items made of precious jewelry and gold and a large breastplate decorated with gold and silver. King Tut’s stunning breastplate shows the god of Ra as a winged scarab and in the center was this gorgeous yellow-green gemstone, this gemstone was what we now know as Libyan Desert glass, or some refer to it as Libyan Gold Tektite. It’s been discovered that in Ancient Egypt pharaohs and their gods would use it from everyday tools to weapons.
Libyan desert glass is said to be formed around 29 million years ago and it’s a natural glass found in western Egypt. For many years scientists didn’t know if it was formed from a meteor impact or a large atmospheric airburst but a new study from some Australian researchers supports the hypothesis that it was created by a meteorite impact.
